OMEGA4LIFE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is privileged to feature Omega4Life, an outstanding national leadership program designed to assist collegiate members to become successful professionals in their chosen careers. Sponsored by GE, Omega4Life features challenging, exciting, and worthwhile activities for selected participants.

Omega4Life is a yearlong, national leadership development program. Omega4Life is designed to develop a pool of outstanding African-American male collegiate leaders for the company and the country.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • An active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
  • Enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university institution pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Technology, Computer Science, Information Technology, or Business (Finance, Management, Marketing)
  • Un-weighted cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above on a 4.0 scale
  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior class standing

Criteria for awards
SCHOLARSHIPS

The following scholarships will be awarded by the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission. Along with each application, an applicant should include at least two letters of recommendation and transcripts from his or her (where applicable) undergraduate and graduate institution (if applicable). Also, all applications must be typed.
I.  FOUNDERS’ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Background: To commemorate the founding of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. by Brothers Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, Frank Coleman, and Ernest E. Just, this scholarship was established to recognize the scholastic achievements of undergraduate Brothers. The Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission will award four Founders’ Memorial Scholar awards annually.
Eligibility and Requirements:  At the time of submission of an application, the applicant must be:
  • an undergraduate Brother who is of sophomore or junior standing;
  • enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited collegiate institution;
  • in good financial standing at all levels (International/District/Chapter);
  • in good standing with the collegiate institution; and
  • have at least a 3.0 grade point average as defined on a 4.0 scale
Application Procedure: These scholarships are competitive. Each Chapter may submit ONE nomination to their respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman. The District Committee evaluates each nominee’s application and selects ONE Founders’ Memorial Scholar from their respective District. Criteria used for the selection are the eligibility requirements listed above, along with extra-curricular activities and community/campus involvement. When possible, the selected candidate should also demonstrate the academic aspirations exhibited by the Fraternity’s Founders.
Amount: $5,000
Deadline: Each applicant must submit his application to his respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman by January 31st of each year. The District Scholarship Chairman shall announce the District Founders’ Memorial Scholar by (and no later than) the District Meeting
II. DISTRICT AND NATIONAL SCHOLAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS
 
  1.  DISTRICT SCHOLAR OF THE YEAR AWARD
Background: As a means of stimulating scholarship among undergraduate members of the Fraternity, a District Scholar of the Year Award was created to recognize an undergraduate student who has displayed academic excellence. The award is given to one undergraduate Brother in each District annually.
Eligibility and Requirements:  At the time of submission of an application, the applicant must be:
  • an undergraduate Brother who is of junior standing;
  • enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited collegiate institution;
  • in good financial standing at all levels (International/District/Chapter);
  • in good standing with the collegiate institution; and
  • have at least a 3.3 grade point average as defined on a 4.0 scale
Application Procedure: These scholarships are competitive. Each Chapter may submit ONE nomination to their respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman. The District Committee evaluates each nominee’s application and selects ONE District Scholar of the Year. Criteria used for the selection are the eligibility requirements listed above, along with extra-curricular activities and community/campus involvement.
Amount: Each District pays a monetary award amount to its winner. Then, upon receipt of all required information from the District, the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission will award each District Scholar of the Year $6,500.
Deadline: Each applicant must submit his application to his respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman by January 31st of each year. The District Scholarship Chairman will announce the District Scholar of the Year by (and no later than) the District Meeting.
       B.  NATIONAL SCHOLAR OF THE YEAR AWARD
Background: The National Scholar of the Year is the Fraternity’s top scholar. This award recognizes an applicant not only for his academic excellence, but also for his overall involvement in the Fraternity, along with his contributions to the advancement of this organization. The National Scholar of the Year will be awarded annually.
Eligibility and Requirements: From those individuals who have been chosen as District Scholars of the Year, the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission will select the National Scholar of the Year.
 Amount: Along with receiving $6,500 from the Scholarship Commission for being the District Scholar of the Year, the National Scholar of the Year will receive an additional $10,000 and a plaque.
Deadline: The Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission will announce the National Scholar of the Year by (and no later than) June 15th of every year.
III.  UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS
Background:  The Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarship Grants were created to support any Brother seeking an undergraduate or graduate or professional degree while demonstrating financial need. Two Scholarship Grants will be given annually, one to an undergraduate student and one to a graduate or professional student.
Eligibility and Requirements: At the time of submission of an application, the applicant must be:
  • an undergraduate Brother who is of sophomore, junior, or a senior who intends on going to graduate or professional school; or a Brother who is of graduate or professional school standing;
  • enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited collegiate institution;
  • in good financial standing at all levels (International/District/Chapter);
  • in good standing with the collegiate institution; and
  • have at least a 3.0 grade point average as defined on a 4.0 scale[1]
 Application Procedure: The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic performance and financial need. When submitting an application, a certification of attendance for the following fall should be submitted (i.e., fall registration). If the applicant is a graduating senior at the time of application, then the applicant must provide some proof of intention to attend graduate or professional school after the completion of his undergraduate studies (i.e., acceptance letter to post-graduate institution or fall registration).
Amount:  Two grants in the amount of $5,000 each will be given each year – one to an undergraduate student and one a graduate student.
Deadlines: Each applicant must submit his application to his respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman by April 1st of each year. Each District Representative via the District Scholarship Committee Chairman shall certify and forward the information regarding candidates to the Chairman of the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission by June 1st of each year.
IV.  CREATIVE AND RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
Background: The Creative and Research Fellowship was established to help those scholars and creative artists who need financial assistance to complete work that is already in progress or to publish a manuscript of study which has been completed. The Creative and Research Fellowships are available to all Americans without regard to race, sex, or Greek-letter affiliation.
Eligibility and Requirements: At the time of submission of an application, the applicant must be:
  • enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited collegiate institution;
  • in good standing with the collegiate institution; and
  • seek assistance with projects in any of the following areas:
    • Humanities- For creative work in fiction, poetry, drama, biography, and the essay; or for scholarly work in any one of the disciplines commonly included in the humanities field;
    • Physical or Natural Sciences- For research in mathematics, physics, chemistry, anatomy, biology, botany, zoology, or in any other field allied to these basic areas;
    • Social Sciences- For research in psychology, sociology, economics,political science, government, and in other areas usually included in the field of social science; and
    • Education- For research in methods, techniques, and history of education on all levels, or for special projects of interest in the field.
 Application Procedure: The Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission will evaluate these applications and select ONE Creative and Research Fellow. When submitting an application for the Creative and Research Fellowship, the applicant must submit a copy of the project in progress, along with a synopsis explaining the creative work or research.
Amount: $5,000
For each year that the Grand Conclave is held by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the Creative and Research Fellow’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee (if applicable)) associated with attending the Grand Conclave to receive his or her award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
For each non-Grand Conclave year, the Creative and Research Fellow’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee (if applicable)) associated with attending the Leadership Conference to receive his or her award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
Deadlines: Applicants who are members of the Fraternity must submit his application to his respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman by April 1st of each year. Each District Representative via the District Scholarship Committee Chairman shall certify and forward the information regarding candidates to the Chairman of the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission by June 1st of each year.
Applicants who are non-members of the Fraternity must send their applications directly to the Chairman of the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission by June 1st of each year.
V.  GEORGE E. MEARES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Background: The George E. Meares Memorial Scholarship was established in February, 1977 by Mrs. Minnie J. Meares Draughan in memory of her late husband, Bro. George E. Meares, who served as Grand Basileus of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. from 1964-1967. These scholarships are granted for the support of graduate study in social work, social sciences, and criminal justice. These scholarships are open to all citizens of the United States of America.
Eligibility and Requirements: At the time of submission of an application, the applicant must be:
  • enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited collegiate institution;
  • in good standing with the collegiate institution;
  • seeking a graduate degree in one of the following areas:
    • Social Work;
    • Social Sciences; or
    • Criminal Justice
Application Procedure:  The Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission will evaluate these applications and select ONE George E. Meares Scholar. Criteria will be based on the eligibility listed above, community/campus involvement, and financial need.
 
Amount: $5,000
For each year that the Grand Conclave is held by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the George E. Meares Scholar’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee (if applicable)) associated with attending the Grand Conclave to receive his or her award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
For each non-Grand Conclave year, the George E. Meares Scholar’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee (if applicable)) associated with attending the Leadership Conference to receive his or her award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
Deadlines: Applicants who are members of the Fraternity must submit his application to his respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman by April 1st of each year. Each District Representative via the District Scholarship Committee Chairman shall certify and forward the information regarding candidates to the Chairman of the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission by June 1st of each year.
Applicants who are non-members of the Fraternity must send their applications directly to the Chairman of the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission by June 1st of each year.
VI.   HERMAN S. DREER SCHOLARSHIP/LEADERSHIP AWARD
Background: The Herman S. Dreer Scholarship/Leadership Award is designed to provide financial assistance to an undergraduate Brother who best exemplifies the cardinal principles of Manhood, Scholarship Perseverance, and Uplift. The award is established in memory of the Bro. Rev. Dr. Herman Samuel Dreer, renowned educator, minister, humanitarian, and author of the first Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. History Book. His daughters, Clarice Dreer Davis and Vivian Dreer, and Friends of the St. Louis Community established the award.
Eligibility and Requirements: At the time of submission of an application, the applicant must be:
·         an undergraduate Brother who is of sophomore standing or above;
·         enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited collegiate institution;
·         in good financial standing at all levels (International/District/Chapter);
·         in good standing with the collegiate institution; and
·         have at least a 3.0 grade point average as defined on a 4.0 scale
Application Procedure: These scholarships are competitive. Each Chapter may submit ONE nomination to their respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman. The District Committee evaluates each nominee’s application and selects ONE candidate to be considered for the Herman Dreer Scholarship/Leadership Award by the Scholarship Commission. If the applicant is a graduating senior at the time of submitting this application, then the applicant must provide some proof of intention to attend graduate or professional school after completion of his undergraduate studies (i.e., acceptance letter to post-graduate institution or fall registration). Criteria used for the selection are the eligibility requirements listed above, along with extra-curricular activities, community/campus involvement, and leadership roles.
Amount: $5,000
For each year that the Grand Conclave is held by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the Herman S. Dreer Scholar’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee) associated with attending the Grand Conclave to receive his award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
For each non-Grand Conclave year, the Herman S. Dreer Scholar’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee) associated with attending the Leadership Conference to receive his award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
Deadline: Each applicant must submit his application to his respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman by April 1st of each year. Each District Representative via the District Scholarship Committee Chairman shall certify and forward the information regarding its candidate to the Chairman of the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission by June 1st of each year.
VII.           RONALD E. MCNAIR SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Background: The Ronald E. McNair Scientific Achievement Award was established to recognize the scholastic achievements of undergraduate brothers who pursue degrees in the fields of science and engineering. The award was established in honor of Bro. Dr. Ronald E. McNair, a renowned American physicist and NASA Astronaut.
Eligibility and Requirements: At the time of submission of an application, the applicant must be:
·         an undergraduate Brother who is of sophomore standing or above;
·         enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited collegiate institution;
·         in good financial standing at all levels (International/District/Chapter);
·         in good standing with the collegiate institution; and
·         have at least a 3.5 grade point average as defined on a 4.0 scale
·         seeking an undergraduate degree in the pure sciences, such as, but not limited to:
o   Chemistry
o   Physics
o   Biology
o   Math
o   Engineering
Application Procedure: These scholarships are competitive. Each Chapter may submit ONE nomination to their respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman. The District Committee evaluates each nominee’s application and selects ONE candidate to be considered for Ronald E. McNair Award by the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission. If the applicant is a graduating senior at the time of submitting this application, then the applicant must provide some proof of intention to attend graduate or professional school after completion of his undergraduate studies (i.e., acceptance letter to post-graduate institution or fall registration). Criteria used for the selection are the eligibility requirements listed above, along with extra-curricular activities and community/campus involvement.
Amount: $7,500
For each year that the Grand Conclave is held by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the Ronald McNair Scholar’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee), in connection with attendance at the Grand Conclave to receive his award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
For each non-Grand Conclave year, the Ronald McNair Scholar’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee) associated with attending the Leadership Conference to receive his award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
Deadlines: Each applicant must submit his application to his respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman by April 1st of each year. Each District Representative via the District Scholarship Committee Chairman shall certify and forward the information regarding its candidate to the Chairman of the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission by June 1st of each year.
VIII.          GRAND BASILEUS AWARD
Background: In recognition of the former Grand Basilei of the Fraternity, the Grand Basileus Award was established to provide financial assistance to graduating seniors who has demonstrated academic excellence and are seeking post-graduate degrees immediately after the completion of his undergraduate studies.
 Eligibility and Requirements: At the time of submission of an application, the applicant must be:
·         an undergraduate Brother who is of senior standing;
·         graduating during the spring or summer semesters of the application year;
·         enrolled full-time in a four-year accredited collegiate institution;
·         in good financial standing at all levels (International/District/Chapter);
·         in good standing with the collegiate institution;
·         have at least a 3.3 Grade Point Average as defined on a 4.0 scale; and
·         seeking a post-graduate degree in any field immediately upon the completion of his undergraduate studies
Application Procedure: Each Chapter may submit ONE nomination to their respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman. The District Committee evaluates each nominee’s application and selects ONE candidate to be considered for the Grand Basileus Award by Scholarship Commission. Criteria used for the selection are the eligibility requirements listed above, along with extra-curricular activities and community/campus involvement. In addition, the applicant must provide some proof of intention to attend graduate or professional school immediately following completion of his undergraduate studies (i.e., acceptance letter to post-graduate institution or fall registration).
Amount: $6,500
For each year that the Grand Conclave is held by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the Grand Basileus Award recipient’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee) associated with attending the Grand Conclave to receive his award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
For each non-Grand Conclave year, the Grand Basileus Award recipient’s expenses (including travel, lodging, and registration fee) associated with attending the Leadership Conference to receive his award and plaque will be paid by their respective District.
Deadlines: Each applicant must submit his application to his respective District Scholarship Committee Chairman by April 1st of each year. Each District Representative via the District Scholarship Committee Chairman shall certify and forward the information regarding candidates to the Chairman of the Charles R. Drew Memorial Scholarship Commission by June 1st of each year.

Deadlines/Suspense
Each applicant must submit his application to the 5th District Scholarship Committee Chairman not later than (NLT) March 18, 2010 of each year(Note:  some of the scholarships and grants have later deadlines – download the application [see forms section] for the specifics for each scholarship).  The District Scholarship Chairman shall announce the District Founders’ Memorial Scholar by (and no later than) the District Meeting.
